Area Description

The apartment is on 16th St and 7th ave, near two subway lines and within walking distance of other great neighborhoods like the West Village and Union Square.

Chelsea has recently become a melting pot of many cultures. Above 23rd Street, by the Hudson River, the neighborhood is industrial or post-industrial, featuring the newly-hip High Line that follows the river all through Chelsea. Eighth Avenue is a center for gay culture, and from 20th to 22nd street between Ninth and Tenth avenue, mid-nineteenth century brick and brownstone townhouses are still occupied, a few even restored to private use.

Since the mid-1990s, Chelsea has become a center of the New York art scene, as an increasing number of art galleries have moved there from SoHo. From 16th Street to 27th Street, between 10th and 11th Avenues, there are more than 200 art galleries that are home to modern art from upcoming artists and respected artists as well.[2] Along with the art galleries, Chelsea is also home to the somewhat well known Graffiti Research Lab. There are many new developments in Chelsea, including a new nine-storey tower with shaped glass front on West St. designed by Frank Gehry.

The district was first added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977 (District #77000954), and later expanded to include contiguous blocks containing particularly significant examples of period architecture in 1982 (District #82001190).

Three ladies in NY, July 30, 2008
By Melinda (Sacramento, San Jose, Los Angeles, CA)
My daughter, her friend and I had a great experience staying in this apartment! We saved lots of money on meals by shopping at the farmer's market in Union Square, and also the market around the corner. The subway was close by, so getting around town was easy. I'm not sure I'll ever rent a hotel room again!! Thanks for sharing your apartment with us!

Nice apt, great location, March 16, 2008
By Kelvin Thompson (Austin, TX USA)
Apartment was quite usable for two adults and two kids. Nicely furnished and decorated. GREAT location in Chelsea. It's in a real neighborhood, as opposed to ultra-touristy areas where we've stayed before (midtown). Three major subway lines nearby took us practically everywhere we wanted to go. Cleaners across the street; two decent-sized grocery stores within two blocks. Owners were very helpful, recommending the best pizza we ever had. We had a great week in Manhattan, and the apartment was a major factor in that.

 Great Time!!!, October 31, 2007
By Kathy Marcum (Starkville, MS USA)
Viet and Leizl, We had a wonderful time during our stay in New York. Your apartment rental was an added bonus. It was nicely decorated roomy and had all the comforts of home including food, coffee, tea, umbrellas, rain ponchos, first aid kit, sewing kit, everything we needed and not to mention super comfy beds. It was great having wireless internet and a computer at our disposal. The location couldn't have been more central to our plans. the subway entrances were only a few blocks away, we bought 7 day subway passes and had fun figuring out how to use them. We only missed our stop once in the beginning. Once we were on the subway it was just minutes to Times Square, Greenwich Village, Chinatown, Uptown and Downtown etc. Being so close to Union Square was great, the Green Market was fabulous and loaded with pumpkins, fruits, veggies, flowers and baked goods. All kinds of shopping and restaurants were right there at our fingertips. Missing New York, Kathy and Anna Marcum

Family from Sydney, Australia, April 16, 2007
By Stathis Family (Sydney Australia)
We had a great stay in this lovely apartment - 2 adults & 2 teenage children. The location is fantastic - close to restaurants, groceries; transport was within easy, safe walking distance and the apartment central to many sights. Apartment was clean, comfortable and roomy for NY. Leizl met us at the apartment to provide guide books and suggestions for eating & sightseeing and was also available for emergency calls. Free internet was a great bonus for our kids, theatre bookings etc. We highly recommend this apartment. Good value for NY.

Dear Viet and Liezl,

Hope you found your apartments in good order. We very much enjoyed staying there.

Viet and Liezl,

We just want you to know how much we're enjoying the apartment and our stay in NYC. Fabulous location. We thought we'd prefer the west side, but this has been really so easy to get around by subway and bus.

Had a great time in Europe too, but don't know how we're going to get all the books we boughtthere and here, home. We threw out most of our clothes in Europe to find room for them and might have to do the same here!

Thanks for all the suggestions of restaurants and use of email. It was a god send as we just couldn't afford to do email on the cruise or in Amsterdam. 75 cents to $2 a minute. We will want to stay here again, and hope to be back before December with other friends.

Didn't know how you wanted us to handle the return of the extra set of keys. We found a set in a drawer that our friends are using and will put them back where we found them, of course. But assume you need us to lock up when we leave. We're going to leave more food in fridge and more cookiess -- the ones you left were a godsend the night we got in and some magazines and some more books, possibly.
