Holmes Beach, Florida travel advice
Holmes Beach was actually named after a developer by the same name who arrived on the island after World War II and created a 600-acre community that would later become Holmes Beach.
If you want to spend a day on the water, there is excellent fishing in the waters surrounding Holmes Beach and Anna Maria Island. Take a charter boat and head out in the Gulf for an exciting day of sport fishing. The grouper, snapper, or mackerel you catch can provide the ingredients for a delicious seafood dinner at your vacation rental. Inshore or backwater fishing is also very popular.
Enjoy a beach picnic with the locals under the Australian Pines, or find a secluded cove and enjoy some private sunbathing. Prefer an animated beach crowd? Then the all-you-can-eat pancake breakfasts at "Cafe on the Beach" is your scene.

Family-friendly activities in Holmes Beach
Holmes Beach has a rather short history compared to other places because it’s still relatively new but what it lacks in history, it makes up for in personality. With a population in the region of 5,000 residents – a blend of permanent and seasonal, Holmes Beach is the largest of three island communities on Anna Maria Island. Bordered to the north by the City of Anna Maria and to the south by the city of Bradenton Beach, Holmes Beach boasts three miles of gorgeous white, sandy beaches and an endless amount of turquoise water.
The community hosts many of the island's fine dining establishments, lodgings and shopping centers to delight your palette and soothe your soul. With tasty international cuisine prepared by chefs recognized locally and internationally, meals range from elegant to affordable, and always include a free view of one of Florida's famous Gulf sunsets.
If you’re lucky enough, you might find a sea turtles nest alongside the coast which will usually be marked by yellow tape. Be careful not to disturb them though because they are endangered. By the time you leave Holmes Beach you will be a Florida Wildlife expert!
Water-based activities abound - swimming, jet skiing, sailing, parasailing, or fishing can easily be a part of a day's itinerary and boat rentals are readily available to fit a variety of watercraft desires. The cultural and recreational offerings of Bradenton and Sarasota await just across the bay, while the attractions of St. Petersburg, Tampa, and Orlando are all a short drive away.
